The Strasburg Train Shop has taken the art of assessing and certifying our pre-owned train inventory to a whole new level.
Our exclusive grading system is the heart of our commitment to providing you with the best quality in used trains. Every pre-loved train that finds its way into our inventory undergoes a meticulous and extensive examination. We leave no detail unchecked, ensuring that each train is in prime condition and ready to embark on its next adventure.
Our skilled team of experts conducts a thorough inspection, carefully examining every nook and cranny of each used train. This inspection process is not just about identifying and fixing any issues; it’s also about ensuring that each train meets our exacting standards for performance and aesthetics.
Once a used train successfully passes through this rigorous assessment, it earns the prestigious Strasburg Train Shop certification. This seal of approval signifies not only the quality of the train but also the confidence we have in its performance and condition.

Hear is a partial checklist of our “Rigorous”
inspection for all STS used trains.
Check the overall appearance and details of the loco shell.
Check operation and condition of the motor(s)
Check operation of the sound system, if installed
Check condition and wear on wheel flanges and pickups
Lube and Oil necessary parts
Check operation of DCC, if equipped
Check operation of lights and smoke generators, if installed
Check the operation and condition of the couplers.
STS Certified – Grade A
Description automatically generated This is our “premier” level of certification. Only the Best-of-the-Best has the honor of this distinction. Here is a list of what it takes to make our STS Certified – Grade A Certification.
Check operation of the sound system, if installed
No or very little wear on wheel flanges and pickups.
Motors, assemblies, and wheels work like new.
No abnormal sounds when running the engine.
Sound and lights work as they should.
STS Certified – Grade B
This is our “advanced” level of certification. These engines go through the same rigorous inspections; however, they just were not able to make the Grade-A Certification that all engines dream to be a member of. Here is a list of what it takes to make our STS Certified – Grade B Certification.
Check operation of the sound system, if installed
No or very little wear on wheel flanges and pickups.
Motors, assemblies, and wheels work like new.
No abnormal sounds when running the engine.
Sound and lights work as they should.
STS Certified – Grade C
